Today we went to this focus group that was not far away - but 2 km where on an extremely tiny road in which the car struggled to get across. Upon arrival, we learned that this group was particularly religious. The men and woman sat separately, and we parted groups as well. The women never leave the house - they don’t go to the market, ever, and were not educated, and were probably sold into their marriages as children. They thought the filter paper was hide - deer hide, cow hide. They are smart about their water - they settle it for 3 hours after a coagulant treatment. However, they are wrong about their beliefs. They believe the coagulant, named phikuri, kills the germs. It only lumps the large particles in the water together so that they are heavy and fall to the bottom of the bucket by gravity. It doesn’t kill it, and 70% of the village people suffer from water bourne illnesses. They have diarrhea a lot. But they don’t think anything is wrong with it.
It was a bit weird to see my last focus group - yet i was in so much pain. I think it was a combination of dehydration and not doing anything but sitting, but my back hurt a bit.
We took some tubewell water and pond water home with us, settled it with phitkuri, and tested the pond water, tubewell, and phitkuri. Hopefully the results are good! I also tested tap water and bottled water. You know, since i’m leaving soon so I won’t have to know how gross the tap water is.
Later, I went for a walk on the beach, but due to exhaustion, I couldn’t walk back, and took a motorcycle back to the hotel and collapsed. Man, I just want to eat some good protein and this is how I feel about water:
